‘Saekso 4’ is a high-yielding, anthocyanin-rich purple corn variety developed by the Gangwon State Agricultural Research and Extension Services for health functional food and processing materials. It was registered for variety protection in 2022. It is bred by crossing the inbred lines ‘HA7’ and ‘HA8’. ‘Saekso 4’ has a silking date of 71 days (2 days earlier than that of ‘Saekso 2’) and exhibits strong lodging resistance with an ear length of 18.6 cm. The grain is a bluish-black semi-flint with purple husks and cobs, making it highly suitable for biomaterial extraction. Notably, its grain yield reaches 832 kg/10a, a 49% increase compared with that of ‘Saekso 2’, exhibiting exceptional high-yielding capacity. Its grain anthocyanin content (170 mg/100 g) and absolute pigment yield were lower than those of ‘Saekso 2’. However, its superior overall productivity ensures a more reliable and consistent material supply for the bio-industry. Adapted to the Gangwon region, this F1 hybrid needs annual seed renewal and proper drainage management to prevent moisture damage. The dissemination of ‘Saekso 4’ is expected to markedly contribute to establishing a stable supply system for domestic green bio-materials and enhancing the incomes of farmers (Registration No. 8985).

High Quality Red Color Waxy Corn ‘Mihongchal’

We report the development of a high quality red waxy corn ‘Mihongchal’, containing anthocyanin. Mihongchal was produced by crossing two inbred lines, ‘HW9’ as seed parent and ‘HCW5’ as pollen parent. The hybrid was created in 2016 and evaluated in Hongcheon, Pyungchang, and Yeongwol for 3 years. Mihongchal days to silking was 72 days and the other agronomic characteristics were similar to ‘Mibaek 2ho’. Mihongchal yield was slightly lower than ‘Mibaek 2ho’. Fresh ears number and weight were 93 and 91% compared to ‘Mibaek 2ho’, respectively but anthocyanin content was 1,160 mg/kg, which is higher than ‘Mibake 2ho’. Resistance to insects, diseases, and lodging was similar to ‘Mibaek 2ho’. Due to the analysis, it was recognized as functional waxy corn with high quality characteristics and anthocyanin content. Since regional yield tests was performed in only Gangwon State, it is recommended only in that region for cultivation. Mihongchal is a resource with excellent taste and functionality that can increase the value of waxy corn. The chosen variety was termed ‘Mihongchal’, its plant variety protection right was registered in February 2023 (Registration No. 9354).

Floral pattern plays a vital role in flower structure. The most basic factors that make up the floral pattern are spots and lines in Sedirea japonica. These factors were expressed in a various pattern according to their location and the type of the flower. Frequent expression pattern is higher in the left side of lateral sepal and labellum than petal and dorsal sepal. The expression type in one plant is usually very different according to right or left of sepals, flowering orders, and flowering times and in some individuals, expression pattern remained constant in all flowers. Two hybrids from the cross between Hygrochilus parishii and H. pasishii var. purpureus hybrid (Hongjadan) have shown similar flower characteristics (flower size, flower background color, and pattern distribution) to those of H. pasishii with the exception of the pattern, size, and expression of the number of spots, and pattern shape of labellum including morphology. The flower of an offspring from Hongjadan x S. japonicum (K10) showed petals and sepals without pattern, red flecks, red spot, and red sectors. The shape and back ground color of labellum were similar to those of Hongjadan and S. japonica. The results of this study will be helpful for breeding new cultivars of Sedirea japonica.
