New Cultivar Developed

조생 황메조 신품종 ‘올찬메’
A New Early Maturing, Yellowish Grain and Non-glutinous Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica B eauv.) Variety ‘Olchanme’

‘Olchanme’ is a new foxtail millet variety developed by Chungcheongbukdo Agricultural Research & Extension Service from 2011 to 2021. This variety was collected in Jecheon and developed through pure-line selection. The culm length of ‘Olchanme’ is similar to that of the standard variety ‘Samdame,’ but its panicle length is longer. The panicle shape differs between ‘Olchanme’ and ‘Samdame,’ but other inherent characteristics (panicle type, grain color, dehusked grain color, and endosperm) are similar. The grain and dehusked grain colors were yellow, and the endosperm was non-glutinous. The heading period is 11 days earlier than that of ‘Samdame,’ indicating that ‘Olchanme’ is an early-maturing cultivar. In local adaptability tests, conducted from 2018 to 2021, excluding 2020, the average grain yield of ‘Olchanme’ is 3.26 MT ha-1. In terms of physicochemical composition, the crude protein content was 10.5% and amylose content was 18.6%, classifying it as a non-glutinous type. Its potassium and magnesium contents were higher than those of ‘Samdame,’ while radical scavenging activity was similar to that of the standard variety. Overall, the new variety ‘Olchanme,’ characterized by higher grain filling than ‘Samdame,’ is expected to demonstrate wide regional adaptability across the entire country, excluding Jeju Island.

A statistical analysis of 9,771 non-glutinous rice in breeding line germplasm collected from Korea (2,836), China (2,136), Japan (1,219), and the Philippines (1,213) was conducted using normal distribution, variability index value (VIV), analysis of variation (ANOVA) and Ducan’s multiple range test (DMRT) based on the data obtained from NIRS analysis. According to the normal distribution, the average protein content was 7.9%, and non-glutinous rice ranging over 10% amylose had 23.6% average content. Most resources were between 5.3 and 10.5% in protein content, and 15.7 and 31.5% in amylose content. The VIV was 0.54 for protein, and 0.83 for amylose. The average amylose content was 25.18%, 24.54%, 22.08%, and 21.47% in Filipino, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese resources, respectively, wheereas the average protein content was found to be 8.19%, 7.79%, 7.58%, and 7.42% in Filipino, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese resources, respectively. The ANOVA of amylose and protein content showed significant differences at the level of 0.01. The F-test value was 412.2 for amylose content, and 108.4 for protein when compared with the critical value of 3.78. The DMRT of amylose and protein content showed significant differences (p<0.01) among resources from different countries. The Filipino resources had the highest level of amylose and protein content, whereas; the lowest level of amylose and protein content were found in Japanese when compared with resources of other origins. These results are recommended as helpful materials in the field of breeding.

‘Daname’ is a foxtail millet(Setaria italica Beauv.) variety developed and registered by Department of Southern Area Crop Science, NICS, RDA in 2014. This variety which collected from IT252182 was developed through pure line selection. ‘Daname’ is a early-maturing variety having 100 days of growth period from seeding to harvesting in Milyang of Korea. The culm length is about 97 cm which is 20cm shorter culm length than standard variety ‘Hwanggeumjo’, and it showed tolerant to lodging in field. The panicle shape is a cylindrical and the length is about 19cm. According to the grain, seed color and dehusked grain colors are orange and yellow and endosperm characteristic is non-glutinous. The yield performance of this variety was about 3.81 t ha-1 in local adaptability test from 2013 to 2014 and it showed similar with standard variety ‘Hwanggeumjo’. As the addition amount of ‘Daname’ in rice increased from 0% to 30% and 100%, the antioxidant ability of ‘Daname’ added rice and hardness/stickiness balances were increased. But we could not find out the difference of hardness/stickiness balances between 0%and 10% addition. So, 10% addition amount was concluded to increase antioxidant ability regardless eating quality of cooked rice. (Variety registration No. 6243)
